[Philmont]: Trekking Poles

I'm 47 and on the high end of the weight range for my height. When some of
the other ASMs on the shakedown hikes bought trekking poles I was intrigued,
but unsure about dropping the money they did on some really nice trekking
poles. I went to a used sporting goods store and bought ski poles for $8.99
a pair. They worked like a charm! Several other ASMs and Scouts bought ski
poles as well, so that by Philmont, the entire crew used poles of some sort.
The only person who had any problems was the ASM with the $120, adjustable
length, cork-handled "real" trekking poles, which broke the first day on the
trail!

While the ski poles were not adjustable, they were sturdy, and they were the
right length for 90% of the trails, and helpful 100% of the time. At 6'0",
the 50" poles were just right for me, but the salesman showed me that the ski
poles could be hacksawed to size if they were too long. Just unscrew the
handles and cut to your preferred length. If you cut too much, just pass
them on to your Scout and drop $9 on another pair!
