In 2000 we ran out of fuel at Santa Claus due to our failure to estimate
fuel consumption correctly. Fortunately, before he left, our ranger had
given us 3 cans of spam. Knowing the meat free nature of the Philmont
Fare, we welcomed the spam. We had already used 2 cans to add some real
meat to our diet. When we ran out of fuel, we traded the remaining can for
a full fuel container. We both won. The other crew got some real meat and
we got enough fuel to see us through our mistake. Lesson? Always have
bartering items on hand.
