Greetings all,
The fact that fuel can be purchased at backcountry commissaries is a
result of the fact that crews no longer cook on wood fires. On my first
trek in 1974, our crew was one of the few that did use stoves (SVEA's
John and mine is still going fine too) and had to carry all of the fuel
needed for the full trek. No fuel was available at the commissaries,
but you could buy an axe and/or saw. I think we took six?? quarts plus
topped off the stoves before leaving basecamp. That was a small price
to pay to not have to scrounge for firewood at each camp - especially
during the 3 straight days of rain.
Happy Trails
