I have trekking poles with plastic handles and a hand strap. I often
shorten the pole, and hold it like a cane. Just the palm of my hand on the
top of the pole. The strap around my hand allows me to keep hold of the
pole, and I can swing the pole with it.

Our troop has an annual backpacking trip in Southern Illinois and about 1/2
mile of the trek is trough bushes with stickers on them. I have started to
wear leather gloves on my hands to keep the stickers from scratching me.
Right now I'm using golf gloves.

I don't have cork handles - I don't know if these tips will help you out.
Good luck.
