For those of you who are driving to Philmont, I would like to suggest that you get one additional item and carry it on your person always - never lending it out to anyone - a spare key for the car.
Last August, a member of our crew managed to lock both my keys in the trunk of my car. We spent the first night at base camp with the help of security gaining access to the vehicle and then reaching in with our poles through the rear mounted speaker to retrieve the keys. At the time I wasn't amused, but now I look back and laugh. It just adds to the great Philmont memories.
For those of you who belong to the Auto Club I would suggest that you go get one of the wallet-size cards containing a plastic copy of your key. It's good for two or three uses to gain access.
