Our troop had multiple crews at Philmont in 2002. Each crew selected a
different trek during their PhilPlanning.
In 2002 our crew of 14 year old scouts had selected a 53 mile trek with
altitudes of 9000 feet and less (no peaks). Due to the fire we recieved a 65
mile trek which stayed mostly above 8300 feet and climbed Mt. Phillips.
Another of our troop's crews contained scouts 2-3 years older than our crew
and they recieved the same trek as us since their original trek had been
mostly in the north country.
Even though we were sister crews, we saw each other only briefly most days
and some days not at all. The older crew was up and out of camp an hour
before us. The older crew was usually through with program and moving on
before we arrived at program. At campsites we were generally a long
distance apart and I only saw their campsite 2 or 3 nights out of 10 on the
trail. The advisors enjoyed comparing notes and telling stories when we got
together.
We did see another of our crews at the Ute Gulch backcountry commisary on
our first food pickup. We enjoyed a 30 minute visit, since we had just
picked up food and they were about to. It is a special treat to see other
crews from your troop while on the trail and swap stories.
