I cannot comment on the conditions at Philmont, but a major storm did come
through the Southwest last week. A foot or more of snow fell in the Arizona
mountains. Several locations north of Phoenix recorded over 3 inches of
rain. That may not sound like much to some of you, but consider that last
year the total rainfall in Phoenix was 2.8 inches. That's for the whole
year. According to the Arizona Republic newspaper, "Yuma received nearly
six-tenths of an inch, 10 times as much as the city had received over the
past 30 months."

The rain is welcome. It will take much more to relieve the drought, but if
this is an indication of things to come, things are looking up.
