Ray,
Don't try to bring your stove on the airplane. See Dr Bob's comments below,
I agree with him 100 percent.
I have found that some gate agents have a I'm God attitude. It doesn't
matter what the company policy is if they want to forbid your stoves they
will. Don't take the chance of having them denied at the last minute.
Check out my troop website on shipping stoves, I've included Philmont 2002
shipping policy in it also.
http://www.troop99packmen.homestead.com/files/stove.htm I also have other
useful Philmont links just use the "Return to Philmont page" link.
Incidentally it cost us about $16.00 to ship 1 Dragon Fly, 1 Whisperlite
plus a few MSR fuel bottles round trip UPS. It took about a week each way
to/from Syracuse New York. I track

Until 9/11, some airlines allowed this, some didn't. After 9/11,
everyone has gotten MUCH more restrictive. Although you might be able
to wrangle permission, it isn't worth the hassle - shipping them to
Philmont is trivially easy and relatively inexpensive. One thing you
don't need is being held up at your ticket counter on departure day
while everyone debates whether or not they will honor the permission
slip you got from the airline HQ's.

If stoves are void of fuel, can they not be shipped in checked baggage
(backpack)

I would like go off subject and recommend a product. Ziplock Heavy Duty
"Big Bags 2 1/4 gallon size. I used mine as a wash bason and I also washed
laundry in it. They stand up on their own because they have a pleated
bottom. I liked them because they zip closed, they were tough, and they were
plenty big. I had a cut down plastic jug bottom that was recommended on
this list and never used it after I foud how useful these bags were. I
purchased a bag of 8 at Walmart, I found them in the Camping / Fishing Dept.
I don't remember how much they cost but it wasn't very expensive. A bag of
8 could be split among the crew. They are heavy duty as the name implies.
