A ouple of thoughts, First off if your gear weighs 70 pounds, then you have
a problem! there shouldn't be much more than what you take on the trail.
Another tought is that the size and weight are for each bag! Most airlines
give you at least two bags and two carryon's . If for some reason a bag of
gear is too big or weighs too much, just split it into two or more smaller
bags.
I use an external frame pack and they can be shipped empty and put in the
carryon boxes the airlines have, and all the gear sent in a regular duffel.
Note we are all talking duffel here, or some other soft sided means of
carrying your stuff. That is because they can be rolled up and stored in the
crew locker. I wven use a soft sided briefcase for the crew paperwork.
