Son of THE advisor, or AN advisor? Remember that there will be at least
two on each crew. The way that we handled it was to NOT deal with our own
sons with anything other than good, positive Parent/son time. I make that
sound easy and it was not that simple, but our Lead Advisor was not the Crew
Leader's father. That helped. So big issues (there were none) would be
handled between a mature scout and an unrelated leader. Plus any
information coming down from the advisors was indirect to the crew leader as
well.
Perhaps more important was the agreement among the advisors to not "engage"
or allow ourselves to be "engaged" by our own sons. This worked very well.
If the boy started something negative, another advisor stepped in rather
than let it become a father/son issue. Situations that I could not have
diffused with my own son were quickly resolved by another adult. We all
know how that works.
If you have an overbearing lead advisor and his son is likely to be crew
leader, this may be an issue depending upon that dynamic. I would try to
avoid that and have a different lead advisor.
A lot of these issues should be worked out during shakedowns.

Subject: [Philmont]: Crew leaders
A new thread, but right now we are struggling with how to break up our group of 24 into two crews. For those who know, what are the pros and cons of having the crew leader be the son of the advisor? We'll actually have 4 adults in each crew, but the way things are lining up, we could have this father-son thing in both crews.

PS - For those who were giving me feedback last week on my
"questionable" scout, he ended up being sick for last weekend's outing.
So we don't know any more now than we did before. It's time for a
heart-to-heart with son and mom.
