Thanks for all your suggestions on both crew leader election and crew
division. We had originally thought of doing the same trek but are now
thinking against it. On the only multi-day trip (4 days) we have been
able to take, we functioned - and I use that word loosely - as one crew
and everyone agreed that was not the way to go. With sister crews the
fear is that boys would tend to "visit" the other crew's campsite,
perhaps when they should be doing other things like cooking, clean-up,
etc. We also anticipate some may want to trade or jump to the other
crew.
We have 16 boys and 8 adults, so we need to limit the number of boys
with parents to 4 per crew because all parent-son pairs, and one triplet
want to be together. The boys range in age from 14-16, are first-time
Philmont participants, have the same amount of backpacking experience
and have similar abilities. Most of the boys want the same things in a
trek - several mountains, 60-65 miles, and similar programs. The biggest
difference is probably how quickly they can break camp in the morning.
We've asked each crew member to give us their top three preferences for
crew mates and what a mess that has become. There's a group of 5 who all
chose each other, but the others crisscross all over the place. I guess
we'll set tentative crews, per this list's advice, with tentative
leaders. We have to have leaders identified to attend the council
training on March 1 and to get them elected, we need to define the crews
so they can talk.
Honestly, I think that whatever the crew composition turns out to be and
whatever treks we get, all will have a wonderful and unforgettable
experience. I just wish it wasn't such a big deal now. (Or maybe one of
the advisors and I are the only ones feeling it's a big deal.)
Thanks for all the suggestions. The information is very valuable since
most of us are first-timers.
