We are a backpacking troop - about 75% of our monthly campouts involve
either a good hike, or a steep mountain, or both. When we plan summer
adventure trips of a week or more they've been to the Smokies,
Montana, Philmont, etc. The Philmont trips involve more preparation
(signups, registrations, talent release forms, uniforms, etc) than the
other trips. The hiking territory is of similar quality. Philmont is
stronger on "the scout experience". Philmont is a pleasanter trip -
showers midway through a trek, advisor coffees, etc.
In our troop, people who would prefer to be alone, are not real big on
following rules, want to see more bears, like cooler weather, and like
the freedom to change plans at the last minute tend to avoid Philmont.
People who enjoy the activities, going to the grand shrine of Boy
Scouting, sharing in the lore that is Philmont, and want to visit the
Southwest prefer Philmont.

Not a topic we touch on too often here, where | most everyone is either a Philmont Phanatic or a novice looking for | information and advice. But perhaps some valuable pointers can come out | of an examination of this issue/problem - that is, if we can see where | some peoples' experiences went down the toilet, perhaps we can avoid | similar pitfalls ourselves. | | I have plenty of thoughts on this matter, but I suspect nearly everyone | on the list would know most of them already, from past posts. So I will | let others set the stage.
