In our trips to Philmont (1997 and 2000), with flight schedules from the SF
bay area arriving late morning and a 3 to 3-1/2 hour drive to base camp, we
found that we would arrive too late for day one activies, so we have stayed
in the meadow between inbound and outbound tent cities. Philmont charges I
believe something like $4 to spend the night in our own trail tents and a
similar reasonable amount for dinner and breakfast. It's worked out well
for us. We get an extra evening at base camp altitiude and a good nights
sleep.
For our 2004 trip we will also have two crews and are looking to do a
pre-tour, spending the night elsewher with an early morning bus ride to the
ranch.
