In 2001 (Wind River Range trip) and 2002 (Philmont), they weighed every
checked item we had; however, the max was 75 pounds then. I guess it's
been lowered by 5 pounds since.
Note that we were a few pounds over on one of our food totelockers, but
they let it slide rather than charging us extra or making us repack it,
because everything else we had was well under. But they did put a
special sticker on it to warn the baggage handlers that it was "heavy".
The Scouts later peeled that sticker off and placed it on my butt.
Now that the TSA is in charge - and also because people are losing their
jobs over security lapses - I would expect zero accommodations for
anything anymore.
