Please note I have no reasons to hate Philmont.
Of the grumblings I have heard over the years, it comes down to 2 main
things I have heard participants say.
1. Too many rules and regulations
2. Too many people
I remember one of my AA treks told me that the only reason their post kept
coming to Philmont was becuase of the safety net. If someone got hurt help
was never far away. Where as in a National Forest it could take a while to
get help.
These opinions are not mine, but what I have heard other participants
comment on over the years.
I think what some people need to remember when they complain about this is
that Philmont is a beginner's backpacking experience. It suits this market
very well. If a troop has lots of experience backpacking already, they may
find that Philmont doesn't live up to their expectations.
