As a reply to several questions from Don Roberts and to add our
perspective, to the question about Cimarron accommodations -

Yes - Philmont will send one of their school busses into Cimarron, to
pickup en route travellers - last summer, the charge was $3 per person. I
thought I learned about this in the Philmont planning guide. If not there,
then on this list. With prior coordination, they will come and pick you up,
bright and early (7:30 AM for us, last year). They picked up another group
at a different hotel, on the same run.....

We have stayed at the Kit Carson in 1999, 2000, and 2002.
We have been very happy with the arrangements.

We like spending the night in Cimarron for several reasons -
We get to the ranch, for our check-in day, early (before 9 AM) and are well
rested and well fed. We also have the opportunity to experience the unique
culture and people of Cimarron, prior to our trek.
The early arrival makes our in-processing less stressful and when
completed, allows more time to enjoy the trading post and Villa Philmonte.
The cost difference ($15 vs 8) is minimal, in our overall travel budget.
For the Scouts, who continue to vote for this, I believe they view it as
final night in "civilization" before their trek into the "wilderness".
However, to me, the benefit of the Scouts experiencing the culture of
Cimarron, is priceless.

As they say, your mileage may vary. This is what we like, and has worked
for us. I would be surprised if the Scouts did not choose to do this again,
in 2004. The reputation of the Kit, Hecks, the Creamee, and the other
shops, are legendary among our Scouts. ....More than one silver "cowboy"
belt buckle, knife, or other "unique" souvenir, have made their way back to
Pennsylvania Like someone said, its all about the journey.
