Re: [Philmont]: Why *DO* People Hate Philmont???

Wellll, I don't hate it, but I could take it or leave
it. Philmont has its problems, but its advantages as
well. For 30 years I had dreamed of going there, then
finally went last year with my son. For him, it was
fantastic. For me, I kept comparing it to my own
50-miler experiences in the Sierras and Philmont came
up short. I had a problem with; no mountain peaks, no
lakes, no water you could swim in, no fish you could
eat, no fires, lots of rules, cows, cowboys, weird
trail conditions, and no solitude.

However, the program activities are great and in my
opinion that's what makes Philmont a Scout
destination. Our most memorable moments had to do
with various staff interactions; our Ranger, Black
Mountain Camp, the Conservation Project, etc. I also
have to admit, it's nice to carry only 40 pounds of
food & gear; those backcountry supply stops are great!

Would I do it again? Yes, we are sked for August 2004
(I have another son, you see). Would I go somewhere
else? Yes, in a heartbeat.
