Somehow going to Philmont has lost some of it's original meaning Waite
Phillips gave it to the BSA for. Nowhere in his words did he state giving it
for the enjoyment of parenthood so that parent/child pairs could hike
together. It was given for the youth.
I'll be the first to tell you that I really enjoyed being a member of a crew
my daughter was on this past summer, but I'll also be the first to tell you
that I benefitted tremendously by being a youth member of a crew my daddy was
not on nor was any other parent.
Do not even think of suggesting or thinking there was a less than fantastic
relationship between my dad and myself. It's just that at some point in
time, It is time for a young person to "flee the nest" and go out on
adventures on their own sans parent.
Attending Philmont is, to paraphrase Neil Armstrong, "one small step for
adult advisors, one giant leap for the youth crew".
