In Robert Peterson's The Boy Scouts: An American Adventure, there's a 1940
photo of a New Jersey Scout troop. Next to it is a chart showing how each
was involved in the war by 1945. One was too young to serve, two got
differments, and every other Scout served in either the army or navy.

Although it may be a bit of a stretch, it has been remarked by several
historians that it was the BSA that won Omaha Beach - that is, that when
many of the officers and non-coms were dead or wounded, and the entire
beachhead was unorganized chaos, that the men with Scout training were
the ones that assumed leadership roles, organized the remaining
effectives, and broke through the German resistance. If actual (and not
just fanciful revisionism), this may have been our finest hour.
