As I recall, PTC asks you to check in on Sunday :-). however, If you arrive
Sunday after they "close up" (around 6pm), they put your name on a board
outside HQ, and a note asking you to go the the tents, settle in, and check
in in the morning. At least that was how they did it in 2002. I'm not sure
how you choose a tent, they may have had something in each of the tent
cities in that regard, I didn't need that procedure. You may want to call
PTC and ask on that one.
Since the Philbus waits for the train, it sounds like you shouldn't have a
problem getting to tent city Sunday evening. Silly to spend $ on a rental
car or Ratan accommodations. Just be sure to grab a quick meal at Ratan
before you get on the bus, if you didn't eat on the train.

Again, this should be no problem. Take the philbus from PTC (or does it go
to CHQ? Not sure) Sat. morning. Call PTC and ask where the philbus pickup
is for train going east (I presume? The West train gets in to Ratan in the
morning, so I guess you must be on the east train).
>I have to confirm train plans by tomorrow.
Amtrak has been advertising buy one - get one free train tix lately, so if
you are not alone, be sure to look into that. Amtrak also gives an AAA
discount, though you probably can't do both.
> Thanks
Hope this helps. I drove to PTC in 2002 and had an absolutely marvelous time
visiting sites between here and there. Fort Union, Petroglyph NM, Santa Fe,
Petrified Forest NP, Painted Desert, Taos, etc.
Our crew is going to take the train this summer.
You'll have fun, I hope you're bringing your family, cause they'll have even
more fun. Let us know how it goes.
