On our 1965 trek we took three burros from Pueblano to Indian Writings.
What I remember best (these days my memory is never best) is that at some
point after the climb up from Pueblano, after the trail leveled off, the
burros all "peed" in the exact same spot. The second and third stopped at
the same spot as the first.
Our ranger had already taught us the diamond hitch in base camp. We were
using BSA Yucca Packs and army surplus "bent plywood" pack frames with
canvas up against our backs. The D rings of the Yucca pack attached to the
pack frame, but sleeping bag, tent, etc. had to be tied on to the pack frame
with a diamond hitch. There were no hip belts in those days, so the load
was carried on our shoulders. Some where on the web is a picture from this
era of a Scout in a campaign hat, an army pack frame and a Yucca pack.
Probably every piece of clothing I took was cotton. I can't remember what
jacket I might have taken.
Here's to the good old days.
