[Philmont]: Crew Shirts

Keep trying to get some ideas on the shirt from the boys. If they can't
design, they may at least have ideas on what elements they would like in the
design. My crew came up with only a very rough sketch of the design. I
gave it to a graphics designer with some Philmont clip art from the internet
and he revised the design into something great.

Last time we went to Philmont we purchased the Philmont Cool-Max T-shirts in
dark Khaki. It was the same color as the dirt so they always looked great
on the trail. When you could see the salt stains it was time to wash. In
Philmont's arid conditions they dried in minutes. We had the crew's design
silk-screened on the sleeve so that you could see it when we wore the packs.
It didn't get covered up or worn off by the pack straps or back. Also, if
you put too much printing on a cool-max shirt you lose the benefits of the
fabric.

Having the shirts really brought the crew together and they looked much
better than the mixed, dirty T-shirts worn by most crews in the back
country.

Three years later I still see the boys wearing the shirts all the time.

This year we will do the same thing but will make three shirts for each crew
member, one for traveling and two for the back country. I'll also make one
for the ranger. We are checking SierraTradingPost.com and Campmor.com for
the Duofold Cool-Max shirts on sale.
