Re: [Philmont]: cleaning up replies to the list

I cannot speak to the foibles of the Digest mode, but I for one much
prefer to see the original message, and most of the time I prefer to see
it in its entirety. When the original post and response are together,
comments made in context are much more clear. In addition, sometimes
postings are made many days after the original, and when traffic is
heavy it can be difficult to recall the original query or comment.
Also, sometimes certain threads become subtly altered in tone or focus
(and sometimes not so subtly!), and posts that were made in response to
the original may be misinterpreted (sometimes badly) if they are thought
to address the current thread versus the original. Finally, and a
complaint I have voiced on a few occasions, I am not enamored of the
fortunately uncommon practice of negative responding to selected
comments that were "cherry-picked" from a larger body of text. IMHO, it
is always "safer" to provide the entire message when giving a negative
response or commentary.

However, FWIW, I do try to remember to snip off the standard footer on
all my responses, and usually also try to remove all previous messages
that are tailed onto a post if I am responding directly to the latest
post only, and the previous posts are not germane (I leave them on if
they are integral to my response). These are things I think we can all
do to reduce the e-clutter.
