Just have to elaborate a bit on this.

Watching rec.scouting is a good reason why it's not a newsgroup. It would
have to be moderated because of all the nutters out there. In any case, a
lot of people have access to mailing lists but not access to newsgroups
(believe it or not). The fact this is a mailing list is the same reason
Scouts-L exists. A Yahoo group was started with the same goal as expressed
by Randy, but it has had little traffic and suffers many of the same
disadvantages (and advantages) compared to a mailing list as usenet has.

You can always create an alt.* newsgroup :-) You will find, I'm sure, that
90% of the listmembers probably don't have a clue what we're talking about
in this thread.

Off hand, I would guess Randy either lacks the time or expertise, I sure
have that lack (at least as to time). Archiving was available in the
predecessor to this mailing list. When that list owner made his unfortunate
decision to stop supporting scouting, we had quite a hole for quite a while.
All of us are grateful for the new listowners volunteering to make this list
available, as flawed as it is (the pass through of reply requests being my
own pet peeve).

Just be grateful we've got a list at all, and if you see room for
improvement, be prepared to be the person to implement it :-)

Don Roberts
