RE: [Philmont]: headlights

I want to mention what is obvious - this list is great for sharing ideas.
What I want to also say is that for first-timers, by no means should one
feel they need to have the high-teach headlights, fancy camp shoes,
store-bought trekking poles, or whatever, to have an enjoyable trek at
Philmont. For the most part, plain old ordinary flashlights, cheap tennis
shoes, et al will work. I know my first trek was certainly much more on the
low-tech end of things as I was a beginner into backpacking and outfitting
several family members at the same time on an already committed budget. My
backpacking toys have been accumulated over the years, and while these
things add a bit of convenience to the experience, by no means are they
necessary for enjoyment of purely and simply living in nature for ten days.
This being said by an admitted gear junkie. Some things, such as the boots
you wear on your feet, the pack on your back and the rain gear that will
protect you from the elements should have the highest priority, but even
then there are relatively inexpensive items that will safely get you thru
the trek. As an example, I will continue to admire the headlamps, but I
haven't come to the point of actually parting with the cash to get one for
myself yet. I use a small tek light and while it takes a hand (or mouth) to
hold it, I've learned to deal with it & those I hike with have learned to
translate flashlight mumble.

Take the ideas & if they will work for you, use them, but don't think you
*have* to have them.
