Probably because it travels from CA to Raton via Omaha!

Seriously, I checked out travel by Amtrak for our 1995 contingent. That
year, we had several adults pushed for time so they asked me to find a
quicker way than traveling by vehicles. We're about 725 miles from
Philmont so at least one overnight stop each way was required if we went
the normal way.

I called Amtrak to see how we could get to from Austin to Raton. Well,
there were two routes, one going through Chicago and the other going
through Kansas City. Needless to say, neither of those would work
because the trip would take too long.

We wound up getting very competitive fares on Southwest and flew to
Albuquerque, spent one night and then on to Philmont via bus. The
return trip was back to Albuquerque and then to Austin via El Paso. It
wound up saving us one travel day which was important to a couple of
people.

Perhaps the best way to travel to Philmont is by motorcoach but you'll
need a large group of 40 or so to make that economical. One advantage
is that no overnight stops are needed and you can sleep on the bus.

As long as your driver doesn't get lost and wind up in Oklahoma,
traveling from Texas to Philmont by motorcoach is great! (this is a
test to see if Chas is awake)
