[Philmont]: Late Train

Our troop discussed arriving a day early. Most of the adults were unable
to unwilling to add an extra travel day do to job commitments. They just
decided to suck it up and deal with the shorter time at base camp on day
1. We did it in '99, arriving at base camp after 3:00 PM from the east
and still managed to have some free minutes that afternoon and enough time
to shop for supplies at the trading post after dinner.

Things may have changed since then, but I doubt that would let you leave
base without fuel and maps.

>FYI: Our crews LOVE riding the train to and from Philmont. That is their
>preferred method of travel and what they usually will choose when we
>select transportation modes. That being said, it is almost ALWAYS late. We
>started planning to arrive a day early to avoid problems. There are
>various places to stay an extra night in the area.
