carried in 2000 died about mid trek and it my tent mate did not have a

I agree that high tech is not a requirement, but there are a number of
items I will not hike without. As an arthritic old fart with bad knees
I will not hike without hiking poles. The Tikka headlamp is another
item I will not do without. It's a good buy. Very lightweight. Hands
free. Batteries seem to last forever. I've seen prices below $30. I
was spending more than that per year on batteries and replacement bulbs
for my flashlights. I use it almost every day.
While it is true that you CAN go to Philmont with less and maybe that's
the ticket for someone who never plans to hit the trails again, but if
you expect to make this a habit I see no reason to throw money away on
less advanced equipment that will eventually be replaced by the good stuff.
