Never was a merit badge. IT was an elective part of radio merit badge at one
time. It was always a part of the First Class requirements.
It alone separated the Second Class from First Class, a big stumbling block
as they say "separates the men from the boys".
It was the Scouts choice whether to use American version of Morse Code,
Universal Morse Code (there are a few subtle differences) or Semaphore.
Morse code tidbit of the day:
Morse code is still used ship to ship by the U S Navy. It's really difficult
to intercept too.
