RE: [Philmont]: Pots and bags

Jason,

My skeptism boils down to the fact that after the wash water is sumped,
there is a swish of clean rinse water, and I don't trust that swish is
enough to eliminate all food smells. Like mentioned in this post, other
items can easily be fit into the pot, like the food supply, stoves, fuel,
etc. Far better IMO than the sleeping bag.

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Pots and bags

If the kids are not cleaning the pots well enough to put a sleeping bag
(inside a water proof stuff sack) in it while hiking, then someone is
failing to ensure safety. If the crew leader is not enforcing propper
cleaning, this is where an advisor should step in.

If pots are not clean, then you risk a visit of a bear to the site and risk
sanitation concerns. Propper cleaning should not just remove food stuffs but
also food smells. This was a reason why Philmont no longer teaches the
"Human Sump" method.

There are all kinds of ways to cary pots. Each person's pack needs their own
way that works best. I can tell you the most annoying way is when empty
pots are hanging on the outside clanging as they hike down the trail.

Many people stuff their pots with food bags or bear bags when the put them
in the pack. This may be the best scenario if someone is not confident that
the pots are not clean enough.

If there is the chance that food smells are not completely removed from the
pots when properly cleaned, then perhaps Philmont should look into this and
tell crews not to do it.
