My favorite "camp shoes" are Acorn fleece socks with a leather sole and a
thin insolite pad insert I made. They cost me $12 and have a total total
wgt 8 oz.
I used a pair of cheap mocs for a while but I like the Acorns better.
I have worn out two pairs of Tevas and used them on many trips. Very
comfortable and good for crossing streams without large rocks in the bottom.
Good arch support and good for wading in streams because the sand and such
flush out easily. If the stream has large rocks and small boulders you will
slip and jam your toes. I have hiked in them for short distances. My
Tevas cost me $50 on sale. Wgt about 27 oz.
I haven't owned a pair of Chacos but they look at least as good as Tevas in
the store.
I have a pair of New Balance 830s, lt wgt running shoes that I am using now
they cost me $60 on sale and weigh about 23 oz. Very good support, stay on
your feet and protect your toes in streams pretty well but do catch sand and
stuff if you don't lace them tight. they work as scrambling shoes and I
could probably hike any trail in them but they may not work well under a
heavy load off trail. I will take these to Philmont this summer.
I have never had a pair of boots blow out on a trip and don't consider my
camp shoes to be serious back up boots. I think duct tape would keep me
going. A friend of mine did have a major blow out in the Grand Canyon and
even duct tape would not keep his sole on as the delamination ran the entire
length of the boot. Fortunately he had a pair of "tennies" and was able
to keep going. My main consideration is comfort and drying my feet so like
John I only slip on my shoes when I am leaving my butt pad to walk around.
I sometimes use them for side trips, scrambling on rocks and any kind of
wading more than t few inches deep. With any of these camp shoes a pair of
wool socks make them much warmer and helps with padding.
Keep hiking and trying different ideas and eventually you will develop your
own preference...
