I know from experience that the intensity of "Philmont Topics" will increase dramatically in 4-6 weeks. However, it is not like the recent discussions of good basic scouting skills has distracted or prevented any serious Philmont topics from appearing. I think the recent discussions on the lack of cooking skills and Morse Code are interesting and relevant. They are spin offs of why some people dislike Philmont.
In a sense, everything at Philmont is handed to you on a platter. Someone said, Philmont is really set up as "backpacking for beginners" and I really had never thought about it that way but there is some truth to that statement. Yes it is hard at times, but it is modern day scouting high adventure. And it is suited to "today's scouts" and we all know scouting has changed. Were it not for some wise old scouters (sorry guys), many skills that are scouting traditions would be lost. Philmont presents an opportunity to keep some skills alive. How about a staff camp that is all about cooking fresh food? On day nine, I would be all over that!
Philmont discussions will come back in force, I promise.
