I didn't measure the weight of crew gear last year for our short trek
(8 days). We used our own tents, cook gear, stoves, fuel, water
filters, and first aid kit. We took the Philmont food and dining fly.
I'll bet that the above crew gear averaged out to around 15 lb on the
first day on the trail, and the first day after the commissary pick
up. The food is a major component of the weight so weight drops day
by day until the next food pickup.
The definition of "crew gear" is a gray area and hard to measure. For
instance, do you consider ground sheets crew gear, or personal? How
about extra water above everyone's personal needs - is that crew gear?
If so, add 2 pounds per quart.
My son was under 100 pounds during our trek. One of our other
advisors (kindly) got my son to give up his sleeping pad, and maybe
two other items, to save a pound or two in the minutes before we
boarded the bus. I think my son was also doing things like drilling
out his toothbrush handle(!). In any event, including crew gear and
water, he started the trek with a pack weight around 28 - 30 pounds.
He has an REI Evening Star internal frame pack, size medium. You
might be able to get the cubic inch size from REI customer service.

We are having a number of boys look at new packs for Philmont. | I have heard the rule of thumb of 4500 cu minimum mentioned in various | spots, and on this list chatter that troop gear averages 24 lbs per scout. | Is any of this accurate??
