We strongly encourage enclosed toe footwear. Some backpacking
alternatives are water shoes, aka "surf shoes." A pair of these weighs
a few ounces and cost less than 10 bucks at the local Wally World. More
costly are the things that some people refer to as "shandals", enclosed
toe sandals like these (not an endorsement)

however, these are still relatively heavy but do have, like the surf shoes
My personal favorite is a pair of Eddie Bauer leather, hard sole
moccasins - actually house shoes - that have served me well for several
years. Picked them up at an outlet store after Christmas for about 8
bucks. something similar would be these:

Only problem with these is you can't wade streams in them.

The really lightweight backpackers say all you really need to do around
camp is loosen the laces which, with my 50th coming up, sounds
reasonable. I can always do with a few less ounces.
