A general rule Rangers used to tell crews was that a recomended pack weight
was about 1/3 of the body weight. This is only a general rule and doesn't
apply to everyone. 1/2 of body weight is about maximum, but not ever
recomended.
For me 1/3 of my body weight is about 80 lbs. My pack is usually 60-70 lbs
when I hit the trail. I wouldn't recomend anyone try to carry that much at
Philmont though. Alot of the crews I saw woulld have a packs weighing from
30-50 lbs, a pretty much bell shaped curve.
A good pack size for Philmont would be in the 4000-6000 in^3 catagory. As
many will tell you the more room you have the more junk you will cary, so
try to shoot towards the lower half of the range. At the same time make
sure you will have enough room. People tend to be surprised by the amount
of space Philmont food bags take up. Once you have put the big stuff in
(sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent) make sure there is still room for the
rest.
Pack size will allow you to select a catagory of packs to look at. The most
important thing to consider is how well the pack fits. There are 2 pieces
of equipment you might avoid buying over the internet/catalog. That is boots
and pack. These need to be tried on in person to make sure it feels right.
