[Philmont]: and - thoughts on pack weight

In 1997 my younger son weighed 100 lbs. exactly and was 4'9½" tall. (I know
this as I just looked up his old Philmont physical.) He was a tough little
kid and carried his share of crew equipment and food. He wouldn't have it
any other way. The only time he had a problem was when the rest of the crew
grabbed him and put him on his back with the full pack. He was liked an
overturned turtle. The pictures are priceless. He carried a Kelty Yukon pack
that was loaded to the brim. I believe the Yukon is around 3500 cu. in. This
pack was more than adequate.

The point is - This is why you have shakedown hikes. See how much each
individual is capable of carrying. Use these training hikes to pare off
those extra pounds and ounces of unnecessary items.

That younger son did grow, weighs 165 now, has 3 treks, and carries an
Alpine Lowe internal pack around 4500 cu. in. now.
