when I go backpacking (granted not a long trip like philmont) my camp shoes
are my bare feet. I've been going barefoot whenever shoes aren't "required"
for about 4 years, and the soles of my feet are as tough as the soles of the
water socks that have been discussed here.
Now I wouldn't advocate bare-feet for any of my scouts, and I usually
don't go barefoot around my scouts, but on my personal trips, It's the
ultimate lightweight camp shoe. Of course I wouldn't do this with a
long trip due to the need for some back-up shoes to wear on the trail.
