There is no BEST way to go to Philmont.

You can ride commercial bus, train or airplane or charter a bus, train or
airplane or drive your car, hike or hitch hike.

Some will be preferred over others depending where you are coming from.

Another variable is you can go straight there or you can take a tour both
getting there or on the way back or both.

Both times I traveled with a contingent to Philmont, we went straight there
and back by bus, not my preferred trip. I like to stop and smell the roses.

The very best Scout trip I ever took was a 5 week tour of West Texas, New
Mexico, Colorado and then on up to Northern Tier for a 10 day canoe trip.
That was a long time away from home but it was a really enjoyable trip and by
the time we arrived at Sommers Canoe Base the Scouts were a lean, mean,
working machine. They had worked it all out prior to arrival and hit the
trail with all four feet paddling in that case.

We traveled 120 miles in the ten days by canoe.

So what is best for your group?

Only the group can decide. Weigh all the options. What is good for one
group isn't necessarily good for another.
