I've using coolmax or an equivalent for years. You can purchase
t-shirts for as low as 9.00. I wear them alone in the summer since the
dry even on humid days after walking in the rain all day and as a first
layer in the winter since they wick away the moisture.
Don't scrimp on the socks, spend as much as you can afford. I prefer
two payers of all poly blends having switched from wool blends years
ago. Personnel preference on one vs two and wool vs poly. Really need
to try different combinations to find out what's comfortable for your
feet.
I've switched to all poly zip offs. Usually look for a light pair on
sale. The poly dries fast and the zip offs double as shorts. Just stay
clear of jeans or cotton sweat bottoms because they take forever to dry.
Most of my scouts use the zip offs or poly sweat pants and they work
fine.
Rain coat. I've used goretex and the laminated breathable coatings and
haven't noticed much of a difference between the two. You get what you
pay for in quality, but you can get some breathable stuff that
inexpensive. I've actually picked up leftover goretex raingear for
under $50.00. Most of the scouts use a good quality, nylon (not rubber
coated) rain jacket and they do fine. Just don't buy the prepackaged
stuff. It doesn't last. Not to toss out brands, but Campmor makes some
good inexpensive raingear under there own brand name.

Subject: [Philmont]: Clothing material
I am going to Philmont this summer and several people in my crew have
asked what the best material for clothing is. Any advice on what socks,
rain jackets, shirts or pants should be made of?
