Good question!!! A couple of points. I don't know the makeup of your crews, but if they do vary in their physical abilities, you might want to let them choose a trek that challenges them without killing them. If you have an older crew, they might want to try a super strenuous or strenuous trek, while a younger crew might better fit into a rugged or typical trek. Also, if you are a sister crew, you are going to see and experience the same things while on your trek. Even with the hardest treks, you don't get a chance to see all of Philmont, so why not have two different treks. Finally, even if you are sister crews, you probably will only see each other when you get to your overnight camps since crews get out of camp each morning at different times and hike at different speeds.
Typically our council sends out a bunch of crews together, each of which is on a different trek. One of the nice things about Philmont is that most treks intersect with other. When you get your itinerary books in March, you will see a chart in the back that will tell you which day on the trail you will encounter another trek. It is really fun meeting up with friends about mid way through your trek and comparing notes (and seeing how grubby everyone has gotten).
Just some ideas to think about. Hope you got your copy of the Philmont Advisor's Guide, an unofficial publication that is available from me.
