Re: [Philmont]: Trek Planning Question - Shipping Gear

Our approch was to ship packs UPS directly to Philmont. We hand carried the
clothes we'd need on the trail and wore our boots. That way, before we left
for the airport we knew everyone had his footware. We shipped first aid gear,
stoves, fuel bottles, trekking poles, and anything else we thought might get
tied up in security (e.g., knives) well in advance. The cartons could be
tracked via the Internet, and were waiting for us on arrival. We stored the cartons
-- or what was left of them ;-( -- at Philmont Security. We used some for
return shipments. [Memo: ship yourself extra strapping tape and shipping labels
if you choose this approach.] We also took our travel clothes with us, of
course. All stuff with us was hand luggage/carry on (NO knives). On return, we
shipped from Philmont the 3 external frame packs, stoves, fuel containers,
and trekking poles without mishap. We shipped internal frame packs as "checked
luggage" on our return flight. All "sharps" should be inside the packs. In
spite of repeated advice, we had 2 scouts try to carry knives through security
in Denver. NOT a good idea! Airlines and security worked with them and
required the airline to treat the knives as "checked luggage". It took extra time
and inconvenience for the youth; a good lesson. The checked luggage all
arrived intact. Those of us who shipped our packs from Philmont got them a few
days after we got home.
