Regarding the "on vacation" philosophy adopted by many adult leaders at
Philmont:
1) You can delegate authority to your youth crew leader, but as an adult you
can never delegate the responsibility you assumed when you accepted the
position as advisor.
2) The adult advisors always have input in matters of health, safety,
welfare of the crew, and Philmont policy.
3) To truly be part of the team the adults will be part of the duty
rotation. The boys like it when the adults help, but not take charge. The
adults and boys will not be equals, but working together equalizes the
differences.
4) I too worked at the Beaubien chuck wagon dinner because it was my turn to
cook dinner. I never questioned whether I should or not. The staff seemed to
like having a responsible adult to help with the meal.
5) If you are planning to take your Philmont trip expenses as a Boy Scout
related tax deduction, you do not want to be "on vacation". You must be "on
duty" the entire time for expenses to be deductible. The lead advisor's
expenses almost always qualify, while it is a little less clear about the
other adults. If a significant amount of personal recreation is involved,
then your expenses will not be deductible. Please consult with a tax advisor
before taking any Scouting related expenses as a tax deduction.

"In our crew, neither of the 2 advisors was "on vacation." We were on the
duty roster every day and we each had one vote when it came to votes. Only
in matters of discipline and safety did we have a golden vote; and even
then, we had one incident where we found it more productive and effective to
turn the disciplinary issue over to the crew leader and his assistant to
resolve."
