Mike,

I had the pleasure of attending HATP last year and I thought it was great.
It was set up as a short trek (Monday thru Thursday) with a Crew of 12. The
instructors Eric and Bob and ranger were very knowledgable and excellent
teachers.
Sunday started with meeting the other crew members than right into a
shakedown. Monday we sorted food and gear and hit the trail. Training (teachable
moments) was tied into the whole day which usually ended around 10 or 11pm.
Friday ended with class room time to review what we learned and I ended up with 16
pages of notes. They covered every possible training topic from Boots to
Packs, from Food to Tents, from Crew behavior to skills development etc...
I would highly recommend the course and take it again in a heartbeat.
I was at Philmont in 74 and 2000 and took the course to help prepare for
another trek this summer.(7/25)

A few points to consider.
1. Get in shape before you go and you will enjoy the backpacking and hiking.
2. Get there early on Sunday to check in and tour. Some people actually
arrived on Saturday but they had prior approval.
3. Bring the crew gear you usually bring
4. Try to find out who is going before and hook up with them to tour the
area.
5. Be prepared to make new friends of a life time.
6. The best part is the training takes place on the trail (learning by
doing)
