Dr. Bob states <<And if you're unhappy with anything, you can
trade it in for a replacement. It's important that you do a good job
here, because the gear you take out will be inspected upon your return,
and you will be charged for damage or loss. That fact should be
impressed upon your Crew before they start the process.>>
The above is very factual, but what he did not mention is the more important
reason for inspecting the gear.
That is to make sure it is serviceable. All gear is inspected before being put
back on the shelf, but Murphy is alive and well at Philmont and sometimes damaged
gear is inadvertantly put back on the shelf.
It is a real bummer to have to deal with a tent missing a tie tape for ten days in
the rain or a tear in the fly at the wrong place. Worse yet is a cooking pot that actually has a crack in the bottom that you did not see and leaks and leaks and leaks.
The more important reason for inspecting your Phil-issued gear very well is you will be living with it for ten days in whatever condition you accept it in. Look it over real carefully. The back country does not stock replacements.
