It is now SOP to ship stoves and bottles to Philmont. Check the Ranch
provided literature for the latest on that. I suppose if Amtrak is
restricting knives, you might as well ship them too. Why they can't go
as checked luggage, well who knows? Note that you do NOT need a bunch
of knives for a regular trek. Two small to medium sized, lock-blade
knives (3 inch blades max) are perfectly adequate. The main use for
knives is cleaner opening of food packages, and a very few similar,
minor chores.
