When our crew went in 2003, Amtrak didn't seem to care. Stoves and fuel
bottles (empty but previously used) in the backpacks, checked in the
luggage, no restrictions, no questions about them being there, no problem
with knives in the packs (don't know about the person, no one had one on
them, but there was no check before getting on the train).

I'd say you should check with amtrak. Who are you referring to when you
say "we've been told?" Amtrak or rumor mill?

Also, since you're from La Cresenta, you may want to consider picking
up the train in Fullerton or SBD rather than LA, just because of the LA
traffic and parking around UNion Station. Parking in Fullerton is no
problem, and things are pretty relaxed here :-). If you leave a car,
long term parking is a lot less expensive, too...Might even be able to
talk a local scouter into letting a car be left in their driveway for
the duration of the trip...
