RE: [Philmont]: Train Travel Restrictions

Checked luggage is a "hit or miss" thing with Amtrak; on the ride out, our
bags were simply stashed in a lower compartment of our car, and were
accessible to anyone at any time. In other words, there really wasn't any
difference between carry-on and checked bags.

On the return trip, they were stored in a separate baggage car, and the only
instructions the agents gave us was to make sure there wasn't anything lose
on the outside of the bags, because stuff tends to fall off during handling.
Several of our guys had very large laundry bags they stuffed their packs in,
then duct taped them shut, for the "checked bag" ride home.

It is now SOP to ship stoves and bottles to Philmont. Check the Ranch
provided literature for the latest on that. I suppose if Amtrak is
restricting knives, you might as well ship them too. Why they can't go
as checked luggage, well who knows? Note that you do NOT need a bunch
of knives for a regular trek. Two small to medium sized, lock-blade
knives (3 inch blades max) are perfectly adequate. The main use for
knives is cleaner opening of food packages, and a very few similar,
minor chores.
