RE: [Philmont]: Cooking Pots

Skip cooking in the pots, just take two for boiling water. We used turkey
bags for all evening meals (the only ones requiring any heating). Mix all
dry ingredients together in the bag (except desserts or mashed potatoes),
mix thoroughly, and add the required amount of boiling water. We always
went a little less on the water, then added more if needed. Wearing gloves
or socks on your hands to insulate from the heat, gently massage the turkey
bag and contents until the water is absorbed and it's ready to eat.
Clean-up is minimal, and the bags can be used as yum-yum bags or for trash.
We were careful, and never had any spillage or accidents. Mashed potatoes
and desserts were mixed in individual bowls if people wanted them. I've
seen posts indicating the use of turkey bags generates unnecessary trash,
but when you consider how much water you save by the minimal clean up, I
firmly believe it is a better use of resources. Or, you could just leave
the yum-yum bags provided by Philmont (one for each day), behind

Have a great trek!
Jill
