I have made the trip from San Diego to Philmont on the train 2
times.........I would highly recommend it. My son was just talking about
the train trip today, and how much fun it was.
ONE suggestion though, make sure that you go over the rules about knives,
etc. before your trip. Make that they know the sleeping cars are off
limits. Make sure they don't make the Club Car a 2nd home just for playing
cards.
Be good passengers and AMTRAK will love you. They are very used to having
scouts ride to Philmont in the summer and know just what to do with packs.
Listen to them........ All our packs made it to PHilmont and home OKAY.
Food in the dining car is a little expensive, but a HOT breakfast and dinner
is worth it. They also show movies at night.
In Albuquerque there is a COLD Stone ice cream shop and other quick
resterants across the street. You can make it to purchase and get back to
the train in time if you RUN. THis is a longer train stop.
There are also Other vendors, food, drinks, snacks,Turquoise Jewelry, rugs,
etc. to buy. We even thought about ordering pizza to be delivered to the
train station.............something you could do at ANY big city that Amtrak
stops for a longer time. (I don't know where that would be going east from
Raton)
THe part about the train I like the most is the ability htat ALL the boys
have to interact with the entire crew.......playing cards, listening to
music, sharing CD's, eating together, etc. A member of one of the Indian
tribes gets on at the New Mexico /Arizona border and presents a talk in the
club card all the way to Albuquerque. He gives info about history, geology,
etc.
A GREAT way to travel and in February there are usualy good deals for train
tickets. A year ago we bought our tickets and paid only $155 per person
Roundtrip. (it was a 2 for the price of 1 deal) Tickets are cheaper for
the younger crew members, but we just averaged the price for everyone. ONe
parent put it on their frequent flyer credit card and we all paid that
parent........worked out fine.
