Just when you thought you'd heard everything.... Wow. I must admit,
this is the first complaint of this type I have ever heard. One
observation and two comments: First, I strongly doubt if anyone coming
off the trail with bad fuel would ever be so flat out nasty as to give
same to another Trailbound Crew! That would be beyond belief nasty.
Second, if something like this ever happens to your Crew, remember two
options: A) Stop at any commissary and get fresh fuel (may require a
side hike to accomplish); or B) Beg fuel from neighboring Crews (most
Crews carry excess) - a pint here and a cup there will get you to your
next commissary. On the latter point, it is probably worth remembering
that in the 60's and 70's it was routine for Crews to share a lot or
even everything they had with other Crews who had lost everything to a
bear-raid (I remember doing this at least twice as a Scout; they were
very grateful and we just tightened our belts another notch til we got
to our next commissary or passed through a staff camp). It is worth
keeping in mind that Philmont is not a true wilderness situation, and
you have one heck of a formal and informal support system in place.
